Google Search Console provides the only direct data feed for Google Discover performance. Understanding the Discover report in GSC is essential for analyzing traffic trends, diagnosing drops, and optimizing content strategy. This guide covers everything the Discover report shows, how to...

Accessing the Discover Report

The Discover report lives under the Performance section in Google Search Console. You need verified ownership of the property. The report appears automatically once Google has enough Discover data to display roughly 100 or more impressions in a 30-day window. Properties without Discover traffic see a placeholder message indicating insufficient data.

The report shows four primary metrics: total impressions, total clicks, average click-through rate, and date range comparison. You can filter by country, date, and page URL. Unlike the Search report, the Discover report does not include query data because Discover has no queries.

Understanding Discover Metrics

Impressions. Impression count in Discover measures how many times your content appeared in a user's feed. Each card view counts as one impression. Google deduplicates impressions at the user level, so refreshing the feed does not inflate the count. A sudden impression drop often signals a content policy issue, a site-wide authority reduction, or a competitor entering your topic space.

Clicks. Clicks measure how many times users tapped on your card to visit your page. Compare clicks against impressions to calculate CTR. The Discover CTR benchmark varies by topic, but a CTR above 3 percent is generally strong. CTR below 1 percent warrants investigation into headline and card image quality.

Average CTR. Google calculates this as total clicks divided by total impressions. Monitor this metric week over week. A declining CTR with stable impressions indicates that your card presentation (headline and image) is not compelling enough relative to the feed competition.

Date range comparison. The report automatically shows the previous period data. Use this to spot trends. A 7-day comparison can catch day-of-week patterns. A 28-day comparison smooths out weekly noise and reveals directional changes.

Filtering and Segmentation

The Discover report supports several useful filters.

Country filter. Discover performs differently by region. If your content targets multiple countries, segment by country to identify regional trends. A content policy violation in one country can suppress impressions globally, but regional interest differences are common and actionable.

Page filter. Filter by individual URL to analyze single-article performance. This is the most actionable view. Identify which articles are driving Discover traffic and analyze what they have in common: topic, headline structure, image style, publishing day, and length.

Date range filter. Discover data updates with a 24 to 48 hour delay. Use a trailing 7-day window for current monitoring and a trailing 28-day window for trend analysis. Avoid comparing weekdays against weekends directly because Discover traffic fluctuates heavily by day of week.

Diagnosing Traffic Drops

A Discover traffic drop in GSC typically falls into one of three categories.

Algorithmic or policy action. Google may suppress content that violates Discover policies, even if the same content remains eligible for Search. Check the Manual Actions report in GSC. If no manual action is listed, review the Discover content policies for recent policy updates. Google's 2025 policy update caused impression drops for sites using unlabeled AI-generated content.

Competitive displacement. A competitor publishing similar content with stronger engagement signals can displace your content from the feed. Review the timing of impression drops relative to competitor publishing schedules. The solution is to improve your engagement signals, not to publish more articles.

Seasonal or interest decline. User interest in a topic naturally declines over time. Check Google Trends for the primary topic of affected articles. A downward trend in public interest requires no action beyond shifting focus to rising topics.

Data Export and Advanced Analysis

The Discover report supports CSV export for advanced analysis. Export 90 days of data and analyze at the URL level in a spreadsheet. Calculate per-article metrics: average daily impressions, CTR, and click volume. Sort by total impressions to identify your top Discover performers. Look for patterns in article length, topic category, publish day, and headline structure among top performers.

Automated monitoring. Use the Search Console API to pull Discover data programmatically. Set up a daily script that extracts the Discover report, compares it against the previous day, and alerts on significant metric changes. Google provides client libraries for Python, JavaScript, and Java.

What GSC Does Not Show

The Discover report has limitations. It does not show user demographics, specific feed positions, dwell time, or scroll depth. For those metrics, integrate with Google Analytics and monitor Discover as a traffic source under Acquisition. Google Analytics shows session duration, pages per session, and bounce rate for Discover traffic, which complements the impression and click data from GSC.

Audit Checklist

  • Review Discover report weekly: impressions, clicks, CTR, and date comparison
  • Set up GSC email notifications for Discover performance changes
  • Export CSV data monthly and analyze top-performing articles for patterns
  • Check Manual Actions report when impression drops exceed 30 percent
  • Integrate Google Analytics to measure dwell time on Discover traffic
  • Configure Search Console API for automated daily monitoring
  • Segment Discover data by country to identify regional opportunities
