Eligibility Requirements

A business qualifies as a service area business if it meets all of the following criteria:
- The business serves customers at their location, not at a business premises
- The business does not have a physical storefront or office that customers visit
- The business has a verified address (home office or commercial mailing address) where business records are kept
Google explicitly prohibits service area businesses from listing a physical address if they do not serve customers at that address. Virtual offices, co-working spaces, and PO boxes used as the business address for a service area business risk immediate suspension (Google Business Profile Quality Guidelines, 2025).
Setting Up the Service Area

After verification, navigate to the "Info" section of the GBP dashboard. The "Hide your address" toggle removes your physical address from the profile, showing only a service area polygon. This is required for SABs that do not serve customers at their address. Define your service area by city, ZIP code, or a radius around your address. Radius options range from 15 minutes to 2 hours of driving time.
Selecting the Right Radius

Radius selection involves a trade-off between coverage and relevance. A wider radius reaches more customers but dilutes proximity ranking signals. A narrower radius ranks better for "near me" searches.
Best practices: Urban markets use 15-20 minute radius. Suburban markets use 20-30 minute radius. Rural markets use 45-60 minute radius. Test radius settings by monitoring the "Queries" report in GBP insights. If most impressions come from outside the service area, the radius may be too narrow (Sterling Sky, 2025).
Multi-Location and Privacy Management
Businesses operating from multiple home addresses must create separate GBP listings, each with a unique address and phone number. Shared addresses require careful documentation to avoid duplicate listing penalties. Solo operators serving a multi-city region can use one listing with a broad service area within a 2-hour driving radius.
Service area businesses operating from a home address must hide the address on GBP. Google prohibits displaying residential addresses on SAB profiles. Consider using a commercial mail receiving address (e.g., UPS store) if privacy is a concern. Google accepts these if the address is verifiable (Google Business Profile Quality Guidelines, 2025).
Service Area and Local Pack Ranking
Google's local pack algorithm weights proximity heavily for service area businesses. The business's hidden address still serves as the proximity anchor for ranking calculations. Profiles with a hidden address rank based on the distance between the searcher's location and the business's verified address, not the defined service area boundary.
This means a service area business in a central part of a city will rank for searches across the entire city better than a business with a hidden address in a remote suburb, even if both define the same service radius. Choose the verified address location strategically within the target service area.
Seasonal and Growing Service Areas
Update the service area in GBP as the business expands. Google does not penalize incremental changes. Seasonal businesses should update the service area before each season begins. Do not maintain overlapping service areas for different seasons as this can trigger duplicate listing flags.
