The Links report in Google Search Console provides data on who links to your site (external links), how you link within your site (internal links), and which anchor text is used. This data is essential for understanding your link profile, discovering link building opportunities, and optimizing...
Report Structure
The Links report has three main tabs: External links, Internal links, and Top linked pages.
External Links
This tab shows all external domains that link to your site, sorted by link count. Click any domain to see the specific linking pages and the target pages on your site. The data is not real-time; it reflects links Google discovered during crawling, which can be weeks to months old. As of the 2025-2026 update, Google improved link discovery latency for high-authority sites, with new links sometimes appearing within days.
The report displays two distinct metrics:
- Total external links: The raw count of links from the referring domain to your site (a single page with 10 links counts as 10).
- Unique linking domains: The number of distinct domains linking to your site. This is the more important metric for ranking purposes, as Google's PageRank algorithm values diversity of linking domains.
Internal Links
This tab lists pages sorted by the number of internal links pointing to them from other pages on your site. The data reveals which pages receive the most internal link equity and which pages are orphaned (zero internal links). Use this to audit your site architecture.
Top Linked Pages
A combined view showing which pages on your site have the most external and internal links. This quickly identifies your most authoritative pages according to Google's link graph.
Anchor Text Analysis
Clicking on a specific linking domain or page reveals the anchor text distribution for links from that source. Anchor text analysis helps you understand:
- Over-optimization risk: If a large percentage of external links use exact-match anchor text, your site may trigger Google's Penguin algorithm or manual action detection. A healthy link profile has a mix of branded, generic (click here, read more), URL, and partial-match anchor text.
- Opportunity gaps: If competitors are linking to you using anchor text that does not include your target keywords, consider outreach to suggest anchor text improvements.
The 2026 GSC update added anchor text grouping for common variations, reducing noise in the report by grouping "click here," "read more," and "this article" into a "generic" category.
Strategic Applications
Internal Link Optimization
Export your internal links data. Look for high-value pages (high external links) that receive few internal links. These are pages where additional internal links from your homepage or navigation could pass more equity. Conversely, pages with many internal links but low ranking may need on-page optimization or better content.
To identify orphan pages, cross-reference your sitemap URLs against the internal links report. Any sitemap URL with zero internal links is effectively invisible to Google's internal link graph. Add contextual internal links from relevant category or hub pages.
Link Reclamation
Use the External links tab sorted by "Top linked pages" to find pages on your site that attract links but are underoptimized. These pages are link assets that could be updated with stronger calls to action, improved content, or internal links to conversion pages.
The "Linking sites" drill-down helps identify link prospects: any site that has linked to one of your pages is a candidate for additional link building outreach, as they already know your brand.
Competitor Link Discovery
While the Links report only shows your own property data, you can use the "Compare" feature introduced in late 2025 to overlay link data from other properties you own. For broader competitive link analysis, combine GSC link data with tools like Ahrefs or Majestic, which offer their own link indices with different coverage and freshness characteristics.
Data Limitations
The Links report does not show:
nofollowandsponsoredlink counts separately (though Google uses these attributes as hints)- Links from pages Google has not crawled
- Historical link data (only currently known links appear)
- Link velocity (how fast links are acquired over time)
For velocity analysis, you must export periodic snapshots and track changes manually or via API.
Audit and Verification
Quarterly, export the full external links list and review the top 20 linking domains. Verify they are legitimate, relevant sites and not spam farms or PBNs. Disavow any domains that appear unnatural using the Disavow Links tool only when you have clear evidence of manipulative linking (Google's John Mueller confirmed in 2025 that disavow is rarely needed for most sites). Then audit the top 20 internal links: confirm your highest-linked pages align with your strategic content priorities. Document any orphaned pages found and create internal linking tickets for the most important ones.
