The Image Pack is a SERP feature that displays a grid or horizontal row of image thumbnails. It appears for queries where Google determines visual content is relevant. The Image Pack can appear anywhere in the organic results: at position 1, intermixed with web results, or near the bottom. Google's algorithm selects images for the pack based on relevance, quality, and page experience signals.

There are two primary Image Pack surfaces: the web SERP pack (typically 3-8 images) and the dedicated Google Images tab (infinite scroll). Optimization for one generally benefits the other, but the ranking signals differ slightly.

Image Resolution. Images must be at least 1200 pixels wide and should have a minimum height of 800 pixels for landscape orientations. Google's 2025 guidance states that "larger images with good aspect ratios are more likely to appear in the Image Pack." Images under 400 pixels on any dimension are excluded.

Supported Formats. WebP, AVIF, JPEG, PNG, and GIF are all eligible. WebP is preferred for its compression efficiency. Google recommends serving WebP with a JPEG fallback. AVIF offers even better compression but is not universally supported in all Google surfaces yet.

Descriptive Filename. The image filename must be descriptive. Google uses the filename as a relevance signal. A file named IMG_4932.jpg carries zero signal. A file named handmade-ceramic-coffee-mug-blue.jpg carries strong topical relevance.

Alt Text. Every image targeting the Image Pack must have alt text that describes the image and includes the target keyword naturally. Alt text is the single most important HTML attribute for image relevance scoring.

Page-Level Relevancy. The page hosting the image must be topically relevant to the query. Google does not rank images in isolation. The page content, title tag, headings, and body text all contribute to the image's ranking context. A high-quality image on a thin, irrelevant page will not rank.

Common Image Pack Mistakes

Overly Optimized Alt Text. Keyword-stuffed alt text reads as spam and reduces relevance scoring. Write natural descriptions. "Handmade ceramic coffee mug in blue glaze on wooden table" is better than "coffee mug blue mug ceramic mug handmade mug."

Missing Structured Data. Most Image Pack candidates lack ImageObject schema. This is a low-effort, high-impact fix.

Irrelevant Landing Pages. If the image shows a product but the landing page is a category page with dozens of products, the relevance match weakens. Use dedicated product or content pages.

Slow Image Loading. Unoptimized images that take more than 3 seconds to load lose the engagement battle before the user sees them.
