SERP Feature Rank Tracking: Measuring Beyond Organic Positions
How to track and report on SERP features including featured snippets, knowledge panels, local packs, image packs, video carousels, and AI Overviews in 2026.
- Organic positions alone no longer describe how a site appears in Google search results.
- Featured snippets appear above the organic results and provide a direct answer extracted from a page.

- AI Overviews, formerly known as Search Generative Experience SGE , are the most significant SERP change since featured snippets.

Overview
Organic positions alone no longer describe how a site appears in Google search results. In 2026, over 60 percent of SERPs contain at least one non-organic feature: featured snippets, knowledge panels, local packs, image packs, video carousels, or AI Overviews. A complete rank tracking strategy must detect and report on these features separately from the traditional blue-link results.
1. Featured Snippet Detection
Featured snippets appear above the organic results and provide a direct answer extracted from a page. Rank tracking tools detect featured snippets by parsing the SERP HTML for the g (result) wrapper with a data-hveid attribute that corresponds to the "featured snippet" layout. The snippet is classified by type: paragraph, list, table, or video.
When a site appears in a featured snippet, the organic position for that keyword drops to position 0. Your tracking system should report the featured snippet presence as a binary field (true or false) and also record the organic position in case the snippet disappears. Some tools in 2026 offer "position 0 tracking" that monitors only snippet status, not the underlying organic rank.
The click-through rate dynamics of featured snippets are complex. Data from 2025 shows that a featured snippet captures approximately 8 percent of clicks for the source domain when the snippet is a paragraph type, but the source page also still appears in the organic results approximately 30 percent of the time [1]. Track both the snippet status and the organic presence simultaneously.
2. Local Pack Tracking
Local packs show three local business results with map data for geographically-intent queries. Rank tracking for local packs requires city-level or ZIP-code-level polling. A query like "coffee shop" returns different local pack results for every city block, so a single national rank for the query is meaningless.
Track local pack presence separately from organic positions. Report three metrics: the position within the local pack (1-3), the organic position below the pack, and whether the site appears in both locations. Google's local search algorithm uses proximity as the strongest signal, so a site may rank organically at position 5 but be absent from the local pack.
For multi-location businesses, track each location independently. Use a separate rank tracking profile for each store address with a 5-mile radius polling location. Aggregate the results into a "local visibility score" that measures the percentage of tracked locations appearing in the local pack for each keyword [2].
3. AI Overview Tracking
AI Overviews, formerly known as Search Generative Experience (SGE), are the most significant SERP change since featured snippets. Google's AI generates a summarized answer at the top of the SERP, with links to source pages embedded within the overview.
Tracking AI Overviews requires parsing the SERP for the AI_OVERVIEW element class. The overview may contain between one and six source links. Your tracking system should record: whether the overview is present, which source links appear, and the position of those links within the overview.
The click-through rate for sources cited in AI Overviews varies widely. Early 2025 data suggests sources cited in the first overview position receive a CTR comparable to organic position 2, while sources cited at the bottom of a long overview receive minimal clicks. Track source position within the overview as a contributing factor to expected traffic [3].
4. Image Pack and Video Carousel Tracking
Image packs appear as a horizontal row of image results within the organic SERP. Video carousels show a horizontal row of video thumbnails. Both features displace organic results downward.
Track image pack and video carousel presence as binary metrics. If your site targets visual or video content, track the position within the pack for your images or videos. Some rank tracking tools now support click-through tracking on image pack results by using browser-based polling that simulates user interaction.
Video carousels typically appear for "how-to" queries and tutorials. YouTube dominates this feature, but Google also surfaces non-YouTube video content. Track whether your non-YouTube videos appear in the carousel separately from YouTube results, as the distribution mechanism differs.
Audit
Audit your SERP feature tracking every month. Verify that your rank tracking tool detects all seven major feature types: featured snippets, knowledge panels, local packs, image packs, video carousels, AI Overviews, and people-also-ask boxes. Run a manual spot-check on 20 keywords by querying them in a private browser window and comparing the results to your tool's output. Create a "SERP feature score" that weights each feature type by estimated click impact. Report this score alongside your organic rank data to give a complete picture of search presence.
