Large ecommerce sites, news publishers, and enterprise content systems routinely hit these limits. The index allows you to organize sitemaps by logical groups. Index file structure
The index file uses a <sitemapindex> root element with the standard namespace http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9. Each <sitemap> entry contains a <loc> element pointing to the child sitemap URL and an optional <lastmod> element.
The index file itself is a sitemap. It follows the same limits. A single index can reference up to 50,000 sitemaps. Each child sitemap can contain up to 50,000 URLs. The theoretical maximum is 2.5 billion URLs. The namespace declaration is identical to a regular sitemap.
Logical grouping strategies
Group sitemaps by content type. A typical structure has a sitemap for pages, one for posts, one for products, one for categories, and one for images. Each sitemap serves a distinct purpose and keeps file sizes manageable.
Group by language for multilingual sites. English URLs go in one sitemap, Spanish in another. Group by update frequency. Frequently updated content goes in a daily sitemap. Submitting the index
Submit only the index file to search consoles. Search engines read the index, follow each child sitemap link, and process all URLs. Do not submit individual child sitemaps separately. The index is the single point of entry.
The index file URL goes into robots.txt and Search Console. Google follows the chain. If any child sitemap fails to load, that section of the site gets no coverage. Monitor the index file status as the canary for all sitemap health.
Automating index generation
Manual index management breaks at scale. Generate the index programmatically on each site build. The build process counts URLs, splits them into chunks of 50,000 or 50 MB, and creates the index referencing the chunks.

Common index file mistakes
Stale child sitemap references cause errors. If a child sitemap URL changes but the index still points to the old URL, that section goes dark. Use consistent URL patterns for child sitemaps. Version the URL if content changes substantially.
Missing child sitemaps produce 404 errors in the index. Every <loc> value must resolve to a valid sitemap. Validate all child sitemap URLs before publishing the index. A single broken reference produces errors for the entire index.

Verify that the index file references only existing child sitemaps. Check that each child sitemap URL resolves and returns valid XML. Confirm that the total URL count across all children does not exceed 50,000 per child. Validate that no child sitemap exceeds 50 MB.
Note the gap between the index file's apparent submission date and the actual freshness of child sitemaps. If the index was last read two weeks ago but content changes daily, the submission path is broken. Fix the submission pipeline.
