Search engines are increasingly measuring this, and content that scores low on information gain is being systematically deprioritized.

Why Information Gain Matters to Search Engines

Google's ranking systems explicitly evaluate whether a result adds unique value. The Helpful Content System, the Review System, and the ranking core all incorporate signals related to originality and distinctiveness. A 2025 patent filing by Google describes a "content uniqueness scoring" mechanism that compares a candidate document against the top N results for a query and computes a novelty score based on entity co-occurrence patterns and argument structure (Google, 2025). Pages that replicate the same entities, claims, and structure as the top results receive a lower score.

This is not speculation. A 2025 experiment by Botify tested 200 content pairs where the only variable was information gain. One page in each pair reproduced the information from the top-3 results. Three Types of Information Gain

Data gain comes from original research, proprietary datasets, experiments, or surveys. A page that cites "a study of 500 companies" has data gain only if the study is original or the aggregation is novel. Synthesized statistics from multiple sources do not count.

Framework gain occurs when content introduces a new mental model, taxonomy, or process. A comparison guide that uses a unique scoring rubric has framework gain. A "decision matrix for choosing X" that does not exist elsewhere in the SERP confers framework gain.

Perspective gain arises from authoritative viewpoints that differ from the consensus. An interview with a subject matter expert who challenges common assumptions can produce perspective gain. This is the hardest type to engineer but the most durable.

How to Engineer Information Gain

Step one is conducting a content gap analysis. Use a tool like Clearscope, MarketMuse, or a simple custom script to extract the subtopics, entities, and claims present on the top 10 ranking pages. Document every claim, statistic, and framework. Your goal is a comprehensive inventory of what is already said.

Step two is identifying the gaps. Look for claims that are stated without evidence, questions that are raised but not answered, and comparisons that are mentioned but not executed. These are your information gain opportunities. A 2025 analysis by Ahrefs found that 68% of content pages in competitive niches leave at least one major question from the People Also Ask section unanswered (Ahrefs, 2025). Answering those questions is the quickest path to information gain.

Step three is creating exclusive signals. Commission an original survey, run an experiment, build a comparison table with criteria no other page uses, or secure a quote from a recognized authority. These signals do not require massive budgets. A targeted survey of 100 industry professionals can produce enough data gain to differentiate your page.

Measuring Information Gain

Track two metrics. The first is the uniqueness ratio: the percentage of claims, data points, or entities on your page that do not appear on any top-10 ranking page. Aim for at least 30%. The second is the citation gap: the number of authoritative sources you cite that no competitor cites. Each unique source strengthens your information gain signal.
