This post compares the traditional SEO toolkit against relevance engineering and identifies where each adds value.
The Traditional SEO Stack
The core of traditional SEO includes keyword research, on-page optimization, link building, technical audits, and content quantity. These methods work through signals that search engines explicitly process: title tags, meta descriptions, heading structure, internal link count, backlink authority, and keyword density.
These signals remain active. Google processes title tags. Backlinks influence authority. Technical SEO ensures crawled pages get indexed. A 2025 study by Backlinko found that the #1 ranking result in Google has an average of 3.8 times more backlinks than positions 2 through 10, showing that link equity remains a strong correlational factor (Backlinko, 2025). Ignoring traditional SEO is not an option.
Where Traditional SEO Falls Short
The problem is diminishing returns. Once your technical foundation is solid and your backlink profile is competitive, further investment in these areas yields marginal gains. The content landscape has shifted.
Traditional keyword optimization targets exact-match queries. But Google now handles 47% of search queries without a click, answering them directly in featured snippets, knowledge panels, and AI overviews (SparkToro, 2025). Exact-match content designed for the old ten-blue-links SERP is increasingly invisible because the SERP itself no longer displays those results in traditional formats.
More critically, traditional SEO treats content as a delivery vehicle for keywords. Relevance engineering treats content as an answer to intent. The former produces pages that rank for specific terms. The latter produces pages that rank for entire query clusters and maintain their positions through algorithm updates.
Where Relevance Engineering Wins
Relevance engineering adds value in three scenarios where traditional SEO plateaus.
Scenario 1: Query clusters. A page optimized for a single keyword may rank for that term but miss related long-tail queries. A relevance-engineered page covering the full intent space ranks for the primary term plus 10 to 20 related queries. In a 2025 test by NetElixir, pages rebuilt with relevance engineering (entity optimization, information gain, topical depth) saw a 340% increase in the number of ranking queries compared to the keyword-optimized baseline, with no additional backlinks (NetElixir, 2025).
Scenario 2: Algorithm updates. Traditional SEO tactics often trigger ranking volatility during core updates. Content that scores high on relevance signals (entity density, information gain, resonance) tends to maintain or improve its position through updates because the signals that drive relevance are the same signals the updates target.
Scenario 3: User engagement. Relevance-engineered content produces better user engagement metrics. Higher dwell time, lower bounce rate, and more conversions. These metrics then feed back into the ranking system as implicit relevance signals.
The Integration Strategy
The best approach is not relevance OR SEO. It is both, with clear priority. Fix technical SEO issues first. Build a competitive backlink profile. Then invest the marginal optimization dollar in relevance engineering, because that is where the remaining upside lives.
A practical heuristic: if your site already ranks on page 1 for your primary terms but traffic is flat despite content additions, you have maxed out traditional SEO. Relevance engineering is your next lever.
Audit: SEO vs. Relevance Prioritization
- [ ] Are all technical SEO fundamentals (crawlability, indexation, Core Web Vitals) addressed? If not, fix those first.
- [ ] Does your site have a competitive backlink profile for your niche? If not, link building should precede relevance work.
- [ ] For pages that already rank but underperform on traffic, run a relevance audit. Are they optimized for intent or keywords?
- [ ] Check query coverage: does each page rank for 10+ queries or just 1-2? Low query coverage signals a relevance gap.
- [ ] Review your traffic history around core updates. Did relevance-rich pages hold while others dropped?
