A 500-word page that covers five distinct subtopics with precision and evidence has more topical depth than a 2,000-word page that repeats the same point in different phrasing. Search engines use topical depth as a proxy for expertise, and the signal is growing stronger with each major algorithm update.
The Anatomy of Topical Depth
Topical depth decomposes into four components: breadth, specificity, connectedness, and verifiability.
Breadth is the number of distinct subtopics a page addresses. A page about "vector databases" that covers use cases, indexing methods, query performance, and integration patterns has more breadth than one that only defines the term. A 2025 analysis by SearchPilot tested pages with varying subtopic counts for the same primary keyword across 300 sites. Pages covering 5+ subtopics per primary query averaged 2.7 positions higher than pages covering 2 or fewer subtopics (SearchPilot, 2025).
Specificity is the granularity of detail within each subtopic. General claims without numbers, dates, or named entities score low on specificity. A page that says "vector databases perform well on similarity search" is weak. A page that says "Qdrant achieves 95% recall at 10ms on 1M vector datasets" demonstrates specificity.
Connectedness measures how well a page links concepts to each other and to the broader knowledge graph. Internal links to related pillar pages, external citations to authoritative sources, and explicit cross-referencing between sections all contribute. Connectedness is the bridge between topical depth on a single page and genuine topical authority across a site.
Verifiability is the degree to which claims can be checked against external sources. Pages with inline citations, footnoted data, and links to primary sources score higher. A 2025 study by Sistrix of 1,500 YMYL pages found that pages with 5+ external citations per 1,000 words held their rankings 2.1 times longer than pages with fewer than 2, and were 44% more likely to survive a core update without traffic loss (Sistrix, 2025).
How Google Evaluates Topical Depth
Google's systems do not measure topical depth directly in a single score, but they assemble it from multiple signals. The Knowledge Graph integration assigns entity relevance scores. The passage ranking system evaluates whether individual sections provide complete answers. The Helpful Content System assesses whether a page demonstrates first-hand expertise or merely synthesizes others' content.
Google's 2025 documentation on the "expertise signal" describes a model that evaluates the density of substantiated claims per page section. Pages where each major claim is supported by evidence, whether a citation, a data point, or a detailed explanation, score higher on expertise than pages with unsupported assertions (Google, 2025). This is the practical mechanism by which topical depth translates to rankings.
Engineering Topical Depth in Practice
Start with a topic model. Tools like MarketMuse and Frase generate topic models that list the concepts a page should cover. Review the model and prioritize the subtopics that directly answer user questions rather than peripheral tangents.
Write to the entity graph. For each entity in your topic, ask three questions: What is it? Why does it matter? How does it relate to other entities in this content? Each answer should produce a sentence or paragraph that adds depth.
Add substantiation markers. Every major claim should be followed by a citation, a statistic, or an explanation. If you cannot substantiate a claim, either find evidence or remove the claim. This discipline alone raises topical depth significantly.
Structure for passage retrieval. Use descriptive subheadings that contain keywords and summarize the section's content. Passages under clear headings are easier for search engines to index and serve directly.
